Time Zone: Single time zone IST @ (Indian Standard Time). 5 1/2 hrs
ahead of London (GMT), 10 1/2 hrs ahead of New York, 5 1/2 hrs behind Australia and 2 1/2
hrs behind Hong Kong.
Airport Tax: For domestic travel there is no departure tax but for international
travels the airport tax is Rs. 500/-, payable while booking the ticket or at the airport.
Customs: Import of one litre of spirits or wine and 200 cigarettes is permitted.
Electronic items like video cameras and laptops must be registered at the customs, and
taken back on departure.
Money: Indian currency is a rupee, which is equivalent to 100 paise. Approx. value
is Rs. 43 = $ 1 and Rs. 70 = 1 Pound.
Communication: Phone and fax (local, domestic & international) are available at
the hotel and all communication centers. Cybercafes are available all across the Mumbai
for surfing.
Tipping: Hotel porters and waiters are generally tipped. Taxi drivers are not.
Dress: Skimpily clad women will be stared at. Wear informal loose clothes during
the day. Suits are the norm for business meetings.
Etiquette: Shoes are never worn in temples or mosques and in some homes.
Bargaining: Street stalls are open to bargaining. Especially at Linking Road.
Otherwise fixed prices are the norm.
Medical: Health and accident insurance is advisable. Immunization against cholera,
typhoid and polio recommended. A mosquito repellent will come handy. Check at the staying
and dining places whether water is aqua purified.
