| Khandala,
is about 2 hours from Mumbai by road or rail. All the trains going to Pune halt at
Khandala/Lonavala. Its clean crips air greets you, as you wind your way up the steep
ghats, leaving the humidity, heat and dust behind. Both Lonavala and Khandala offer
breathtaking views of cascading waterfalls during the monsoon, and the surrounding
mountains of the plains spread out to the horizon. |
| Karla 12 Km
from Lonavala boasts of one of the best preserved caves dating back to 160 B.C. The
excavation of this cave temple started during Hinayana period of Buddhism. A short trek
away from Karla are the Bhaja caves, excavated in the 2nd century B.C. |

Caves are set among green hills with a waterfall and a view of Lohagad and Visapur Forts
at a distance. JKarla and Bhaja are easily reached from Malavli station (on the
Bopmbay-Pune rail route) or by taxi and autorickshaw from Lonaval. |

OF INTEREST : Valvan Dam, Sunset Point, Bushi Dam (during monsoon).
TRANSPORT: Autos are available between Lonavala/Khandala/Karla.
COMMUNICATIONS: STD booths are available all across the highway and at various
places in and around Lonavala and Khandala.
EATING OUT: Ramakant at Khapoli, Kamat at Khandala for South Indian Cusine. At
Lonavala Ramkrishna for Moghlai food, Hotel Adarsh and Chandralok for Gujarati Thali. Also
famous Chikki and Chatpat snacks which are available at bazaar in Lonavala. The
famous chikki shops are Maganalal/Cooper/National chikki marts.
STAYING OUT: Lot of hotels to suit your budget and pocket are available
in Lonavala/Khandala. At Karla, Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation resort is
located. It is advisable to stay at Khandala, being quietest of all with less traffic and
good scenic views. Also private bunglows are available for picnickers going overnight. |
