History: The Khajuraho temples were built in the short span of a hundred years, from 950-1050 AD, in a truly inspired burst of creativity. Of the 85 original temples, 22 have survived till today, constituting one of the world's greatest artistic wonders. These temples were built by Chandellas, a dynasty which survived for five centuries before falling to the onslaught of Moughals.

What to See: The temples in the Western, Eastern and Southern groups, the Archaeological Museums are worth  a visit too. Basically all the temples follow a three-part layout. You can enter the temple through a porch, known as the Ardhamandapa. Behind this is the hall or Mahamandapa, supported with pillars and with a corridor around it. A vestibule than leads into the Garbhagriha, the inner sanctum, where the image of the god to which the temple is dedicated is displayed.

The Temples are almost all aligned east to west, with the entrance facing east. Some of the  earliest temples were made of granite, or granite and sandstone, but all the ones from the classic period of Khajuraho's history are made completely of sandstone. The temples can be divided into three groups: Western, Eastern and Southern. Of these, the Western Group is the most impressive.
